Detroit Tigers Second baseman Placido Polanco was named amongst the American Leagues elite defenders today, snatching his 2nd Gold Glove in 3 years at the position.
Placido turned in a .997 Fielding Percentage, set a career-high 112 double plays, and only committed two errors in 1289 innings this season.
Polanco, who is a free agent following the completion of the 2009 season, still holds the MLB record for the most number of consecutive games played at Second base without committing an error (186).
Detroit Manager Jim Leyland has expressed his desire to see #14 remain in a Tigers uniform, but GM Dave Dombrowski appears resigned to the fact that they will lose him.
As a Type A free agent, Polanco will likely command a lucrative deal on the free agent market in an off season where the Tigers will be minding their checkbook. Detroit could offer him salary arbitration, but they might not be able to afford what they get out of it.
As a big fan of Placido, let me extend my warm and hearty congratulations on a job well done.
I hope to see you back next season, Polly.
Just please don’t end up in a Twins uniform. I might cry.
